Wonder May Fade, but Lessons Linger

    Ben Brantley

October 23, 2013: It’s just a simple ditty, with a jaunty lilt. Its rudimentary lyrics have something to do with a boat and rope, and you can imagine its being sung mindlessly by sailors or perhaps by a little boy, as it is here. But listen to it again, and then again, and it starts to sound melancholy, and maybe even sinister. By the last time you hear it, it has acquired a voice of chilling, mortal finality.
