This uproariously funny comedy will tour the five boroughs followed by a limited three-week engagement at The Public as part of The Mobile Shakespeare Unit, which strengthens community engagement with the arts by bringing free, world-class productions of Shakespeare to communities all across New York City. Mistaken identity leads to delightful mayhem in the Bard’s classic play about two sets of twins separated by stormy seas. When one pair dares to trespass into a foreign city to find the other, the comedy of errors begins and the long-lost brothers must overcome wrongful imprisonment, angry wives and hilarious confusion on their journey to a joyful reunion.

A ‘Comedy of Errors’ That Never Stands Still

    Ben Brantley

November 7, 2015: Here’s an equation for fans of theatrical problem solving: What happens when you multiply two men by four hats? The answer, it would seem, is infinite possibilities for confusion, consternation and resolution. If you question my math, then check out the high-spirited traveling production of “The Comedy of Errors” that has come to rest at the Public Theater. Well, “come to rest” is perhaps not the best phrase for a show that never, ever stands still. The latest offering from the Public’s Mobile Shakespeare Unit, this streamlined 90-minute interpretation of Shakespeare’s early comedy of identical twins on the loose has spent three weeks touring prisons, homeless shelters and community centers in New York City. The troupe’s mandate is to bring theater to audiences who, for whatever reasons, cannot make it to the theater.
