Actors Live Their Double Lives, Both on the Screen and Off

    Ben Brantley

April 20, 2011: Actors never get much respect from scriptwriters. The thespian characters who flounce through classic comedies (“The Royal Family”) tend to be neurotic, self-dramatizing narcissists, while those who show up in darker fare are often neurotic, self-dramatizing narcissists with homicidal streaks (the film “A Double Life,” all those bio-dramas about John Wilkes Booth).
