NEW YORK TIMES REVIEW:
"Wicked does not, alas, speak hopefully for the future of the Broadway musical."

NEWSDAY REVIEW:
"Overproduced, overblown, confusingly dark and laboriously ambitious jumble."

USA TODAY REVIEW:
"The most complete, and completely satisfying, new musical I've come across in a long time."

VARIETY REVIEW:
"The musical's cumbersome plot has its roots in Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name. A hyper-clever "prequel" to L. Frank Baum classic The Wizard of Oz, which of course inspired the beloved movie, the book is a windy exercise in literary subversion. It turns over the magical tapestry of Baum's tale and reveals the messy knots of yarn on the backside, providing an apologia for the much-maligned Wicked Witch and questioning the comfortingly simple definitions of good and evil retailed by children's book writers."

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS REVIEW:
"It's such a Wicked waste of talent"

THE NEW YORKER REVIEW:
"The show's twenty-two songs were written by Stephen Schwartz, and not one of them is memorable. They leave you longing for the wit and playful precision of Yip Harburg, whose words filled the movie Oz with wonder. Don't be offended by my frank analysis, Glinda sings to Elphaba. Think of it as personality dialysis."

TIME REVIEW:
"No one mourns the wicked," goes one big number in the new Broadway musical Wicked. But in this shrewd and enjoyable retelling of the Wizard of Oz story from the witches' point of view, they get something better: understanding. Turns out that Elphaba, better known to us as the Wicked Witch of the West, was born green, and that caused her to be shunned by the popular kids at school."

NY1 ON STAGE REVIEW:
"The best thing about Wicked is its stars, whose talents cast a powerful spell."
