Synopsis: The Motherf**ker with the Hat is a new high-octane, verbal cage match about love, fidelity, and misplaced haberdashery from playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis. Jackie and Veronica have been in love since the 8th grade. But now, Jackie is on parole and living clean and sober under the guidance of his sponsor, Ralph D, while still living and loving with his volatile soul mate Veronica who is fiercely loving, but far from sober. Still, their love is pure. And true. Nothing can come between them - except a hat. This world premiere play stars Bobby Cannavale, Chris Rock, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Annabella Sciorra and Yul Vázquez.

Broadway Reviews

NEW YORK TIMES REVIEW:

"The play that dare not speak its name turns out to have a lot to say. Stephen Adly Guirgis’s vibrant and surprisingly serious new comedy opened on Monday night at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater under a title that cannot be printed in most daily newspapers or mentioned on network television. "

WALL STREET JOURNAL REVIEW:

"Theatergoers familiar with the work of Stephen Adly Guirgis know that the gigawatt expletive embedded in the title of his latest play is one of his favorite words—on stage, anyway. Whether the public at large will feel comfortable seeing it on a marquee is an open question. Broadway is a scary place to open a straight play, especially one whose name can't be said out loud on network TV. It stands to reason that "The Motherf**cker With the Hat" (to give the play its official, double-asterisked title) should have done poorly in previews, the buzz-inducing presence of Chris Rock notwithstanding."

AM NEW YORK REVIEW:

"You can’t help but wonder what made Chris Rock choose to make his Broadway debut in “The Motherf----- With the Hat.” While Stephen Adly Guirgis is a distinctive playwright and his new comedic drama has some merit, Rock’s role is pretty small for a star comedian of his stature. Perhaps he wanted to hit Broadway in baby steps?"

CHICAGO TRIBUNE REVIEW:

"The casting of box office-juicing celebrities, an increasing body of evidence shows, often turns out to be a Faustian act on Broadway. It's one thing to stick Chris Rock, a gifted stand-up comedian but hardly a legitimate actor, at the center of a raw and pulsing play like Stephen Adly Guirgis' terrific “The Motherf**ker With the Hat.” It's entirely another to surround him with the likes of Bobby Cannavale, Yul Vazquez and especially Elizabeth Rodriguez, all actors from the LAByrinth Theatre Company and inveterate creatures of the stage, ready to scream their passions, manifest their neuroses and generally flay their souls all the way to the back of the balcony."

BACKSTAGE REVIEW:

"As its title indicates, Stephen Adly Guirgis' "The Motherf**ker With the Hat" is provocative and profane, but, just as those two asterisks blunt that title's immediate impact, the Broadway production of this raw, wild comedy-drama compromises the author's and director's vision. "
