NEW YORK TIMES REVIEW:

“A straight shot of eroticism steamed open last night at the Eugene O’Neill Theater under the innocuous name of Spring Awakening, and Broadway, with its often puerile sophistication and its sterile romanticism, may never be the same.”

NEWSDAY REVIEW:

"Did not merely open at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre last night. The action was more like ripping open, more like breaking out, more like tearing into the pretend pop and reused plots that pass for new musicals on Broadway today."

USA TODAY REVIEW:

"Beautiful, messy, exhilarating, awkward, vital: They're all adjectives you might use to describe first love. So it's fitting that you could also readily apply them to Spring Awakening, the imperfect but transcendent new musical." & "Offers a trip unlike any other you're likely to experience this season."

VARIETY REVIEW:

"For anyone weary of pedestrian screen-to-stage adaptations or cut-and-paste jukebox assemblies, the arrival on Broadway of a truly original new musical like Spring Awakening is exhilarating" & "This strange, beguiling show is by no means flawless, but with subtle, nurturing changes, the creative team and cast have fashioned an already seductive work into something even more lovely and lyrical."

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS REVIEW:

"Great news for theatergoers who have craved a new musical with attitude, youthful exuberance and a fresh, gutsy sound. A serious show that raises provocative issues. And if Broadway audiences are lucky, it will run for many seasons to come."

THE NEW YORK POST REVIEW:

"The gritty, groundbreaking Spring Awakening gave an unexpected jolt of sudden genius to wake up the hidebound Broadway musical. This is a must-see musical, and not the least for the way it's performed."

AMNY REVIEW:

"Anyone who enters the Eugene O'Neill Theatre will be privileged to behold the wonder of theater that is Spring Awakening, arguably the most breathtaking American musical since Rent or even Sweeney Todd."

THEATERMANIA REVIEW:

"Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater's innovative, frequently brilliant musical version of Frank Wedekind's shocking 19th-century play shines brightly on Broadway."

WASHINGTON POST REVIEW:

"The sweet sound of the future is what you hear these days on West 49th Street. It swells eight times a week in the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, where a spellbinding new musical, Spring Awakening, is up and running for, one hopes, a long time to come." & "Represents the sort of imaginative boost that the American musical desperately needs....Feels like an invigorating step in a more richly creative direction."

Masterpiece Awakened
Reviewed by: Racster   2008-10-22

Spring Awakening is a theatrical masterpiece. Like Poppi (a fellow reviewer), I too am a theatre professional. And I too have seen lots of great work, mediocre work, etc . . . I value all opinions, but I'm not sure that being a teacher makes one opinion any more valuable than another. Nonetheless, FOR ME, Spring Awakening was one of those rare theatrical experiences that you don't have often. It was moving, inventive, and totally captivating. The dark, tragic story is multi-layered, and I'm sure that I didn't catch all the subtleties during my first all-too-brief experience with this musical. The time flew by, and when it was over, I wanted to see it again immediately. Every performance was outstanding. The lighting design and staging were both outstanding. And the show contains some of the most original orchestrations and harmonies I've seen in NY in a very long time. This show is brilliant--it's the kind of experience that made me go into theatre in the first place.

Score to remember

Loved it. Kept my interest the whole time. The music stays in your head. The sound track is a keeper. Reminds me of a modern day Godspell. A little provacative for a preteen set, but totally entertaining. Will keep your interest the whole time.

Dont Bother
Reviewed by: Sammi   2008-10-19

've heard people RAVE about this show, so I got tickets in the front row. And I absolutely hated this show! It was so depressing... I like shows that make me feel good! The cast was good at the singing, especially being so young, but the storyline was just awful. I didn't like the songs one bit, and it was such an inappropriate show -- I was embarrassed to be with my family! I would not recommend this show to anyone.

BEST SHOW ON BROADWAY...NO JOKE
Reviewed by: Dan J   2008-10-19

The best show on Broadway without a doubt! I have seen everything there is, on and off and off off. This show is everything I hoped it would be and then some... The acting, singing, and drama were all fantastic. I thank the cast for giving me a night I will never forget, I never buy the CD at the show, I did with this one and I'm still singing

Over 50 and Loved the show
Reviewed by: Russell   2008-10-19

Hey folks, I am over 50 (52 to be exact) and I loved this show. I have seen it twice on Broadway and it is one of the best shows I have seen. One of the reasons some people may not like it is more geared toward the question "why do you go to see a Broadway musical?". I go to see fun as well as dramatic musicals - so my opinion is that this show is great. I think even better than Rent. If you go to see a musical to have fun and escape, this is not the show for you. If you go to be moved and challenged, this is right up your alley. The subject matter is dark (teenage angst and a bad series of events as a result) and it isn't a "Drowsy Chaperone" fun time. The music is great, more geared toward a young audience and/or a rock sensibility. The lyrics were not the best (I have the cast albumn on my iPod) but overall the music fits the action and feelings of the characters. The choreography was not really dancing but movement (I just remember stomping around) but, again, fits the situation and characters' feelings (I would not have given that a Tony). Lastly, the cast is INCREDIBLE and really fit the show. I will be curious to see how they do with the touring company that will start in SF (where I live).

Groundbreaking
Reviewed by: Tony Lance   2008-10-19

I saw the show again this past Friday. It was the 11th time. I am in love with this show and the AMAZING ensemble cast of young talent. Every time I see the show, there are things I find that I didn't see before. This show is groundbraking in much the same way as the Originial "A Chorus Line" was in 1975 and "Hair" before that. I have been going to the theater for many years now and when I get that special tingle, I know I am watching a classic in the making, something really special. And the Cast...Well, John Gallagher Jr. is giving a Star Turn in this show. He is heartbraking, funny, a volcano about ready to explode with talent! This kid has quite a career ahead of him. The cast is terrifically talent, but he is OUTSTANDING. I would love to see him win the TONY, but alsas the committee might feel he is took young and must EARN his way. Outside the stage door, everytime I have been there, the fans give them such love. Young and Old alike, this show hs an effect on them all. And these kids are so appreciative of all the support. Everytime I have spoken to John Gallagher, he is so friendly and warm. He remembers me, calls out my name...he makes everyone at the stage door feel so special. He is truly a nice guy and so amazed at all the attention. I say this to one and all, run and get tickets to this show while this amazing cast is still in it. And then wait at the stage door and see what I mean. You will fall in love with the show and them , as I did.

Great!

I'm beginning to think I'm a sap for adolescent angst in musical format. Another original cast viewing for me, and I'll say that it was just so...different than anything I'd ever conceived of seeing on Broadway; needless to say, I was blown away. When young talent blossoms like this, you can see why the Antoinette Perry peeps did their due process and rewarded innovation. Now let's see how many copycats are spawned...
