Synopsis:South Pacific concerns the lives of U.S. military men, nurses and the residents of the Polynesian island they occupy during World War II. Nurse Nellie Forbush is "In Love With a Wonderful Guy," a French planter with small children. Clean-cut Lt. Cable has fallen hard for Bloody Mary's daughter Liat. And the seabees, sailors and marines will tell you that there is "Nothing Like a Dame." The show's gorgeous score also includes "Cockeyed Optimist," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair," "Some Enchanted Evening," "Younger Than Springtime," "Honey Bun" and "This Nearly Was Mine." "From the seductive swell of a full orchestra playing the glorious five-minute overture through the poignant final tableau of love and reconciliation, this is ravishing theater."

BEST SHOW YOU WILL EVER SEE !!

I have seen the new production of South Pacific at Lincoln Center three times already and may go again. It is that good !! My usual choice of music is hard rock/heavy metal but I also love Broadway. Go figure. Can't understand the last reviewer's negative comments. It boggles the mind. This production is amazing. Terrific cast, great music, great orchestra & not a bad seat in the house. Go see it, you will love it.
A rare experience

As a long-time Broadway theatregoer, I have to say this production is among the best I've ever seen. It is lavish in all the right places (stunning lighting design, that 30-piece orchestra, lovely expansive set). Very good choices on musical staging give a natural, guys-fooling-around feeling rather than neat, nifty Broadway-style dancing. So many revivals try to find something new in a show, and in doing so they lose what made the show a success in the first place. This doesn't do that--it goes for maximum depth in the existing material rather than a strange over-the-top "modern" reading. All the lead performances are exceptional, but Paulo Szot is a revelation. Truth be told, I never liked "South Pacific" much until now. Szot brings a mature tenderness to his role, and suddenly you understand how Emile falls so completely in love with a woman he's only known for two weeks. It's a triumph of musical theatre acting and worthy of every award it's been given. If you love musicals, give yourself the treat of seeing a production that captures the very essence of Rogers and Hammerstein. You may not get this chance again.
Astonishing perfomances in a perfect musical

South Pacific is an absolute must see show. No one today writes more beautiful melodies than Richard Rodgers nor more apt lyrics than Oscar Hammerstein. Kelli O'Hara is astonishing in her ability to transform Nellie from a naive and confused individual to a confident young woman who is no longer burdened by her former prejudices. And what an amazing voice she has. Paolo Szot is perfect as Emile; his performance is so very
moving and his voice is astounding. Matthew Morrison is terrific as Lt. Cable.
The entire cast is wonderful. The orchestra, sets, lighting, etc, add tremendously to the impact that this show has on the audience. Go see it!!
The Orchestra Does it All!

...saw South Pacific this afternoon and thought the production was great. The voices were beautiful and the sets were inspired. All in all a truly transforming afternoon. If I was asked for one element that made the production a success, I'd certainly say it was the orchestra. Imagine, a full 30 piece orchestra in this day and age of small orchestras or the cast toting their own instruments. Not only was there a full compliment of musicians
, but in several instances, the stage recedes and the musicians are front and center. How magical!

I escort a group of 11 year old girls in a theater club to Broadway plays every other month. They have seen South Pacific, Lion King, Legally Blonde, Hairspray, The Little Mermaid, The Fantasticks, and Mary Poppins. Yesterday, I asked them their favorites. This was their answer: They liked South Pacific best, then The Fantasticks, then Lion King. Even kids can pick 'em right!

This isn't my favorite show, but I understand why it won. It was really beautiful staging. Everyone should put Kelli O'Hara in blues and greens.
