Synopsis: On a dilapidated, remote farm, Vanya and his niece Sonya have worked slavishly for years to sustain an estate in decline. Now the Professor and his wife Yelena (Cate Blanchett) have returned to visit, bringing with them chaos and disruption. Constant visits from the charismatic Astrov (Hugo Weaving) are not helpful. It is in this climate of frustration, thwarted hopes, and disarray that three consuming love affairs grow.

NEW YORK TIMES REVIEW:

"Love has no dignity — no, not a shred — in the Sydney Theater Company’s glorious “Uncle Vanya,” which runs (and lopes and dances desperately) only through Saturday at City Center. In Tamas Ascher’s heart-bruising production, part of Lincoln Center Festival 2012, people who reach out to touch someone are likely to find their balance in jeopardy. An attempted kiss can trip them up as effectively as any banana peel, while gentle caresses somehow turn into body slams that knock over their recipients like ninepins. Eros makes klutzes of us all, it seems, and no one is immune. "

AM NEW YORK REVIEW:

"f the summer theater season of 2012 is remembered for nothing else, it should go down for the unexpected reign of "Uncle Vanya." After all, when was the last time a single Chekhov drama received three straight revivals over a relatively short period of time?"

BLOOMBERG REVIEW:

"Cate Blanchett and her Sydney Theatre Company’s propulsive staging of Anton Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya” hadn’t planned a New York stop on its world tour when I reviewed it last August in Washington. But Lincoln Center Festival chief Nigel Redden smartly booked it into City Center. Now New Yorkers have a chance to see this febrile star’s Yelena, a lethally bored young wife. "

ACCESS ATLANTA REVIEW:

"Theatergoers who've come to think of Anton Chekhov's work as either static or preciously delicate will have their preconceptions dashed with Hungarian director Tanás Acher's ludicrously comedic, intensely physical staging of Uncle Vanya for Sydney Theatre Company, now at New York City Center as part of the Lincoln Center Festival . "

NEW YORK POST REVIEW:

"It’s not often that a Chekhov play is almost drowned by laughter. Yet that’s exactly what happens at the Sydney Theatre Company’s “Uncle Vanya,” which just opened at City Center as part of the Lincoln Center Festival. Director Tamás Ascher and his pitch-perfect cast, led by Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving, understand that characters who are so miserable, so uncomfortable with themselves, are as comical as they are touching.
