TIMON OF ATHENS NEW YORK TIMES REVIEW

Opening Night: March 1, 2011

Show
Did He Like It?*
  Synopsis
Perfect Crime Off-Broadway

Timon of Athens is Shakespeare's play for the post-Bailout Age. Its central concern--money's dark potential to corrupt every human interaction--couldn't be more timely or fascinating. As one of Shakespeare's least-familiar works, it is also one of his most unique: a comedy written with an acid pen, a morality tale told in a fury. Timon of Athens will be presented as the inaugural production of Public LAB SHAKESPEARE, a vital new platform for The Public's ongoing exploration of the Shakespeare canon that will continue the growth of The Public's Shakespeare Initiative and expand the many ways The Public produces American interpretations of Shakespeare. Timon is directed by Barry Edelstein, Director of The Public's Shakespeare Initiative, and will feature acclaimed Emmy Award winner Richard Thomas, who has been hailed as "one of America's leading classical actors" by The New York Times. Last seen by Public Theater audiences in As You Like It at The Delacorte Theater, Thomas is a veteran of the stage and screen. From David Mamet's Race on Broadway, to the celebrated national tour of Twelve Angry Men, to television's "The Waltons," Thomas' performances make a lasting impression on all who see them. Featuring Che Ayende, Tom Bloom, Max Casella, Reg E. Cathey, Cary Donaldson, Brian Keane, David Manis, Anthony Manna, Greg McFadden, Chris McKinney, Orville Mendoza, Mark Nelson, Joe Paulik, Triney Sandoval and Richard Thomas.

A Dinner of Water and Stones for Those Friends Who Don’t Come Through

*By CHARLES ISHERWOOD
Published: March 1, 2011

"The barking is voluminous, but the bite doesn’t draw much blood in the Public Theater’s new production of “Timon of Athens,” the inaugural Shakespeare Lab presentation from the company, starring Richard Thomas as the Greek nobleman transformed from lavish philanthropist to confirmed misanthrope in the twinkling of an eye, or rather the emptying of a once-fat purse."
