MACBETH AT BAM NEW YORK TIMES REVIEW
Opening Night: April 5, 2011
Show
Did He Like It?*
Synopsis
From the Olivier Award-winning company Cheek by Jowl comes a scintillating take on Shakespeare's Macbeth that is physical, psychologically taut, and unsettling to the bone. One brilliant move follows another: Shakespeare's infamous witches, here distilled to haunting voices, absolutely terrify in their evanescence as the actors move like phantasms across the shadow-flecked stage. All the while, the madness of Lady Macbeth (the magnetic Anastasia Hille) accelerates with fatal inexorability. Toxically enmeshed, the lady and her lord inhabit a single, conflicted consciousness, one that festers in self-loathing even as it blindly seeks the destruction that will ultimately be its own.
Ambition Doth Curse All Makes of Men

"That ambition can poison the hearts of small spirits as thoroughly as great ones is the unsettling message of the director Declan Donnellan’s intimate, streamlined new production of “Macbeth” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. As portrayed by the compelling actor Will Keen, Shakespeare’s Scottish general is less a man of great distinction undone by the pursuit of immoral ends than an average fellow caught in a trap of someone else’s making, rattled with nervous laughter at the horror of what he has become."
