LUCIA'S CHAPTERS OF COMING FORTH BY DAY NEW YORK TIMES REVIEW
Opening Night: September 14, 2011
Did He Like It?*
Lucia's Chapters of Coming Forth by Day explores Lucia Joyce's life and after-life. As a young woman in Paris, her world was filled with writers, artists and intellectuals. She was a dancer and a painter. Her father believed Lucia to be the true inheritor of his genius. While still in her twenties, her behavior grew erratic. Admitted to a mental hospital at age 27, Lucia spent the next fifty years in confinement, until her death in 1982.
Musings About Death, Joyce-Style

"James Joyce is your father and Samuel Beckett is one of your boyfriends. How do you make your own path? You try to become an artist, of course, a dancer (be gone, words!), but instead end up institutionalized for almost 50 years. That’s the story of Lucia Joyce, thwarted artist, crazy person and subject of “Lucia’s Chapters of Coming Forth by Day,” a suggestive but unsatisfying Mabou Mines production written and directed by Sharon Fogarty that is having its New York premiere as part of the 1st Irish Theater Festival."
